Van Helsing is asleep in yet another borrowed room... this one at the Vatican where he gets some much-needed sleep as he awaits his new assignment.

As he sleeps...

...he begins to dream...

He'd been sleeping fitfully for a few hours - the sun had come up and he'd gone to bed, but he couldn't call it sleeping, really - and when Loki had left the bed, he'd twitched and panicked a moment before finally allowing himself to drift into dreams.

He'd seen this place before; he and Lestat had snuck in in the dead of night, once, and he still thought it was the most beautiful place he'd ever seen in his life.

It was quiet, except for the sound of some distant chanting, and he could smell incense burning and hear the flames flicker in the candelabra.

He added nothing to the noise, stealing quietly to the back of the chapel.

Still sleeping, he turns over, shifting to find a comfortable position - which he's rarely been able to do before, why would he figure he would be able to now?

But still, he sleeps.

There are rooms back here. He doesn't know how he knows, and he knows he has to get to one of them, but not how or why.

The room he finds is unlocked, and so he steps inside, still not knowing why.

He twitches on the bed, still drifting just on the other side of sleep. Restless. Like always. In dreams, but not the hellish nightmares he normally faces... not yet.

The figure on the bed twitches, turning, and he approaches, slowly, soft-footed but sure.

He touches the shoulder that's turned to him, ready for an attack if needs be.

And an attack comes. It lacks weapons, but has more force than one would figure such an attack would have from a sleeping man. An arm at full force, full speed straight toward David's heart... again, it lacks a weapon, so it's only a fist, but still strong.

He's faster in dreams - fast enough to be out of the way, albeit with his back against the wall, and rubs his chest where Van Helsing's fist made contact.

"What are you doing here?" he hears himself asking.

He cracks one eye open, peering at the figure.

"I believe," he growls, "that I should be asking that question."

He steps forward, calling a flame to his hand and sending it to sit on a bracket on the wall.

"I don't know why I'm here."

He glares, still through just the one open eye. "I belong here. I sleep here - when I sleep. You..." he peers at him again, opening the other eye to see better, "...I know you."

He nods, sending another flame to the other side of the room, bathing them both in light.

"Yes, you do. I'm sorry to have startled you, Master Van Helsing."

"Why are you here? In Rome? In my room?"

He shrugs.

"I have as much knowledge on this situation as you do, my good Sir monster hunter."

"Then do me a favor and let me sleep. I get little enough of it as it is." He groans and closes his eyes again, arm dangling over the edge of the cot.

He stops forward until he's standing over the cot, and looks down at him.

"You don't know why I'm here, then?"

He rolls his head back and half-raises an eyebrow, one eye cracking open again.

"How would I know that?"

He shrugs.

"There has to be a reason for me being here, hasn't there?"

He kneels.

"And not just, 'to keep you from sleeping'."

Another glare. "I don't know.

"I'm tired. You figure it out."

He rolls away again.

He pokes Van Helsing in the back.

"If I'm not allowed to sleep, then you aren't, either. Now get back here and help me figure this out, won't you?"

He rolls his head back. "What are we supposed to figure out? Aside from, apparently, I'm not allowed to sleep again."

He mumbles, "Not that I was sleeping all that well anyway."

He shrugs.

"Anything at all. You're a master of the supernatural. Ignoring my presence, do you feel anything unusual in this place?"

He shakes his head.

"Only thing I 'sense' is Carl moving around in the lab."

Then he looks into David's eyes - not on purpose, that just happens to be where his gaze lands after he blinks - and his breath catches for the briefest of moments, nearly imperceptible.

He's not stopped looking at Van Helsing's face, holding breath he doesn't need to breathe, and he hears it - the hitch, and he swallows.

"Nothing else?"

"Is there supposed to be?"

His eyes travel to Van Helsing's mouth, and he shakes his head.

"I don't know."

But perhaps there shouldn't be... that.
